Our Trip To Tonga

Senior Students Patiently sharing resources.

Thanks to these generous folk

The Berry/Easterbrook family visited Tonga in July 2008. We spent most of our time in the village of Tufuvai on the island of Eua.

We had a lovely connection with the people of that village, and exchanged some songs with them. We performed with their cultural group to a group of Tongans, and tourists, including New Zealand scientists and the New Zealand High Commissioner!

Members of Tufuvai Village are very keen for us to bring a group to stay in the village next year, to experience traditional Tongan culture and music.

We visited the local primary school and high school, and were shocked by the lack of resources there. The primary school has no computer or printer, and it costs them 70c a page to get their copying done. Since returning, we have secured a donated photocopier and a computer from two generous businesses and Air New Zealand have offered to transport the goods and have suggested we can send some other resources, like paper and pens. A Muse member has also donated a laser printer.

I mentioned this story at Open Song, and lots of people said they would love the opportunity to contribute, so The Muse has offered to coordinate the collection of money for this project.

The high school is desperate for a microscope and any other science resources we can find. The primary school needs the above mentioned equipment, plus pens, rulers, pencils, erasers, folders, scales and paper.

Cheers, Nikki Berry
