The course aims to help you develop vocal technique, acting and performance skills, develop confidence as a solo singer and become familiar with the Musical Theatre genre.
- Guidelines of vocal health with the aims of creating vocal resilience; recognising and minimising vocal fatigue; and creating awareness of the many healthy ways of use.
- Warming up for performance with the aims of energising the body; enhancing vocal health; energising the breath; and activating a range of vocal qualities, dynamics, and pitches.
- Interpreting repertoire with the aims of: realising the dramatic intent of the lyrics; improving technique and reliable function of the voice; improving musicianship; creating a character; building confidence as a performer; and communicating to an audience.
- Participating in and observing coached sessions with the aims of: developing rehearsal and audition skills; increasing understanding of repertoire; and giving accurate and positive feedback.
The final class will include a brief warm-up, followed by a performance for family & friends.
Prerequisites: Can sing a melody that is recognisable by others who know the song. Ready to improve solo performance and to gain experience from being coached singing solo in front of a supportive group
of learners.

About the tutors: Valerie Wycoff - Lea Henderson
Valerie Wycoff has been teaching singing for twenty years, and teaching tertiary level singing and performance (National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art) for 6 years. She holds degrees in Theatre Arts, and in Music (Voice Performance), is a Master Practitioner of neurolinguistic programming, and is currently training as a practitioner of the Feldenkrais method of Awareness Through Movement. Through classes, workshops, private tuition, master classes and adjudication, she enjoys helping singers of all ages learn to develop their performance art.
Lea Henderson graduated with a BMus in 1993 and has worked as a freelance accompanist for some years. She has worked on a number of musicals for the Court Theatre and Showbiz Christchurch as well as touring national productions. Lea has accompanied many notable singers including Dame Malvina Major, Patricia Payne and Malcolm McNeil. She has also been a key accompanist for National Academy of Singing and
Dramatic Art since its inception in 1994.
